After investigation and experimentation with Outlook view settings I was able to reset things but what worries me is that I did not do anything that should have changed the settings AFAIC. Any ideas? Find the least terrible MS default, then right click on the bits, like Flag Status, Mention, Categories, that you dont want, Remove Column. Under View - Change View try Compact View. If you like it then click the Apply Current View To Other Mail Folders.
